#isolation
- Archaic apse variant — An extremely rare, regional, or archaic term in the Romanian language (used sporadically in early translations of ecclesiastical or ritual texts), sometimes serving as a corrupted or localized variant for 'apse' or denoting a liturgical furniture element/secluded space within a house of worship. In the context of the philosophy of sacred space, the term emphasizes the idea of a withdrawn, hidden, or secret corner, where the individual can reflect away from the community's gaze.
- Alienation — The psychological, social, or legal process by which an individual becomes estranged from themselves, their community, or the products of their own labor, losing identity or conscious control over existence. Clinically, it denotes a profound mental disorder marked by loss of contact with objective reality, while in legal terms it indicates the formal transfer or alienation of property rights to another entity.
- Exile — A residual archaic, bookish, or rare poetic form, sometimes used in the past as a variant for 'străinătate' (foreign lands) or for the state of absolute isolation of the spirit. In certain early romantic writings or old translations of philosophical texts, the word suggested a melancholic rupture from one's homeland, a long wandering among strangers, or the mental state of a person who no longer finds their place at home.
- Allochronic — Occurring or developing at different times or during distinct geological eras; relating to organisms, species, or biological processes that are temporally isolated, thereby preventing hybridization or ecological overlap. In evolutionary genetics, the concept describes a structural mechanism of speciation whereby populations become reproductively isolated because their mating or activity periods do not coincide in time.
- Allopatric — Relating to related species, populations, or organisms: occupying completely different geographic ranges, isolated or separated by natural physical barriers (mountains, rivers, deserts) that prevent gene flow and direct interbreeding. In evolutionary biology, allopatric isolation represents the primary structural mechanism triggering speciation, leading to the accumulation of independent genetic mutations in the separated populations.
- Amixia — The absence of sexual reproduction or the genetic and structural inability to crossbreed between individuals belonging to different species or populations, leading to their reproductive isolation. In a broader sense, it describes the lack of normal mixing or gametic fusion within a biological cycle, with direct implications for genetic purity or speciation.
- Shock absorber — An apparatus, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, or electrical device used to absorb kinetic energy and attenuate the intensity of shocks, vibrations, noises, or oscillations of a system in motion; an essential component of vehicle suspensions. In an adjectival sense, it describes a substance, porous material, or structure that has the property of dampening or absorbing physical impacts.
- Annobon — A volcanic island situated in the Atlantic Ocean, south of the equator, constituting a distinct province of Equatorial Guinea. Historically discovered by Portuguese navigators on New Year's Day in 1473, the isolated locality is recognized for its spectacular mountainous relief, its crater lake named Mazafin, and for preserving a unique local creole culture.
- Anti-rattle — Designed structurally or treated to prevent, reduce, or stop rattling, harsh intermittent friction, or parasitic vibrations in mechanisms in motion. In an industrial sense, it describes a damping device, an elastic gasket, or a lubricating additive structurally engineered to stabilize fine mechanical parts and eliminate acoustic micro-shocks.
- Disliked — Having become the object of a feeling of antipathy, aversion, or rejection; a person, collectivity, or idea viewed with displeasure, hostility, or enmity by those around them. In a social sense, it describes the state of an individual isolated or marginalized within a group due to unpopular character traits or contested actions.
- Earthquake-resistant — Designed, constructed, or structurally consolidated to withstand seismic movements, ground vibrations, and earthquakes, minimizing the risk of collapse or severe damage. It applies to design codes, load-bearing structures, buildings, bridges, or technological materials equipped with damping systems, base isolation, or flexible reinforcements capable of absorbing inertial forces.
- Unsociable — Demonstrating reluctance, repulsion, or disinterest toward social interactions, group activities, or community integration; unsociable. In a psychological and behavioral sense, it describes a person tending to isolate themselves voluntarily, avoiding conversations and human contact, without necessarily implying violent hostility or the violation of legal norms (which are specific to antisocial behavior).
- Arterioculture — A bacteriologic diagnostic method consisting of inoculating onto special culture media a blood sample collected exclusively from an artery, aiming to identify the presence of pathogenic microorganisms (bacteria or fungi) in the circulatory system. This structural investigation is essential in suspected cases of infectious endocarditis or severe bacteremia, where isolating the pathogen from the arterial bed offers superior diagnostic precision.
- Atomization — The act of atomizing and its result; the transformation of a liquid into extremely fine droplets through mechanical or pneumatic pulverization under high pressure. Figuratively, in a sociological and political sense, it represents the process of extreme fragmentation of social structures, reducing communities to isolated individuals lacking organic solidarity.
- Autarkic — Based on autarky, relating to a closed economic or political system within which a community, region, or state ensures its total independence by exclusively consuming goods produced inside its own borders, refusing or minimizing external trade and imports. In an ancient philosophical sense, it describes a state of spiritual self-sufficiency and full moral independence of the individual in relation to external factors.
- Autarky — A state or economic policy of a state or community aiming for absolute self-sufficiency and total independence from the outside, by domestically producing all resources necessary for subsistence and development; the voluntary absence of international trade relations. In ancient Greek philosophy (Cynics, Stoics), the concept represents the virtue of being master of one's own life, freed from material desires dependent on others.
- Autarkism — A school of political or philosophical thought derived from the principle of autarky, which promotes and justifies the deliberate isolation of a community or state and its organization on strict bases of self-sufficiency; a doctrine that places absolute independence from external influences, resources, and markets as the supreme value for preserving structural identity and sovereignty.
- Self-isolation — The act of voluntarily separating oneself or doing so at the recommendation of authorities from the rest of society, by staying at home, to prevent the spread of a contagious disease or as a form of deliberate social withdrawal. Although the notion of isolation is old, the hyphenated compound spelling 'auto-izolare' has entered heavily into the administrative, medical, and everyday language in Romania, treated as a distinct form not registered individually in the general dexonline body.
- To self-quarantine — To voluntarily isolate oneself at one's own domicile or in a specially arranged space for a determined period, with the purpose of preventing the spread of a contagious infectious disease.
- Self-imposed exile — Voluntary departure from one's homeland or community and settling in a foreign place, driven by deep political disagreements, imminent ideological persecution, or private moral and creative reasons. Unlike forced exile, the decision belongs to the individual, being an act of protest, protection, or assumed isolation.
