• At random / Incoherently — A Latin phrase literally translated as 'from this one and from that one' or 'about this and about that'. In clinical psychology, neurology, and psychiatry, it describes a chaotic, incoherent speech with no logical connection between ideas, typical of patients experiencing delirium episodes, dementia, acute mental confusion, or severe intoxication with psychoactive substances.
• In anger / Prompted by rage — A Latin phrase translated as 'by an angry person' or 'under the impulse of rage'. In psychopathology, clinical psychology, and forensic psychiatry, it describes acts, statements, or assaults committed during an intense affective state, where extreme rage temporarily narrows the field of consciousness and reduces the patient's capacity to control impulses or evaluate consequences.
• From start to finish — A Latin phrase from Horace's Satires, literally meaning 'from the egg to the apples' (referring to the traditional course of a Roman banquet). In academic, medical, and psychological contexts, it is used metaphorically to describe an exhaustive, comprehensive, and chronological analysis of a phenomenon, pathology, or individual development, covering the entire spectrum from the absolute origin to the final phase of manifestation.
• Abalienation — The act of alienating or the state resulting from it; mental alienation, derangement of the mind, or loss of cognitive psychological faculties. In Latin medical terminology and early neurology textbooks, 'abalienatio mentis' designated a global collapse of intellectual functions, serving as a conceptual predecessor to the modern terms dementia, psychosis, or severe psychic dissociation.
• Abandonment — The act of leaving, or permanently giving up on a person (child, partner), an asset, or an ongoing action. In clinical psychology and psychiatry, it is a central concept studied for its profound impact on emotional development, generating attachment traumas, severe anxiety, and persistent dysfunctional cognitive schemas.
• To abandon — To intentionally leave someone, breaking bonds of care or affection; to give up an activity, therapy, or goal. In behavioral medicine, it is frequently used to describe a situation where a patient prematurely discontinues an essential medical treatment or rehabilitation program.
• Abandoned — Having been left alone, deserted, or deprived of parental, medical, or emotional care; a clinical descriptor used for subjects who experienced a brutal severance of primary attachment bonds. Psychologically, an abandoned child or patient displays a major risk of developing anxiety-depressive disorders and borderline personality disorders.
• The Abantiad — The articulated and Romanianized form of the patronymic Abantiades, directly representing Perseus, the son of Zeus and Danae. In the history of medicine and archetypal psychology, the figure of the Abantiad is interpreted as a symbol of the surgeon or the courageous therapist who uses sharp instruments (the sword metaphor) to symbolically excise the pathological 'monster' or the psychic trauma that petrifies the patient's development.
• To deviate — To move away from a direction, rule, or established path, or to change the normal course of a phenomenon. In behavioral psychology, it is used when a patient deviates from a treatment plan (non-compliance), and in epidemiology, it describes the moment a pandemic curve deviates from the initial predictive model due to sanitary interventions.
• Deviation — The act of deviating; a departure from a norm, rule, protocol, or an established mean value. In medical biostatistics, the term is fundamental (standard deviation) to measure the dispersion of clinical data, while in occupational medicine, it indicates a breach of protective or hygiene regulations.
• Abbagnano existential approach — The Abbagnano perspective in medical psychology refers to the application of positive existentialism (the theory of philosopher Nicola Abbagnano) in psychotherapy, emphasizing the structure of human possibilities, coping with existential anxiety, and the clinical approach to choices during psychological crises.
• To abdicate — In a forensic and psychopathological context, the term describes the voluntary or forced act by which a person relinquishes prerogatives, rights, or duties due to mental incapacity, alienation, or severe cognitive decline (such as senile dementia). In classic psychology, the verb also defines the pathological relinquishment of the ego's conscious control over impulses, drives, or volition (abdication of the will or abulia).
• Abdication document — A literary noun form historically used as a synonym for 'abdicare', denoting the result or official document certifying the relinquishment of authority. In psychiatric semiology and forensic medicine evaluations, the term emphasized the formal act of behavioral relinquishment generated by severe emotional lability, external psychological pressure (blackmail, coercion), or a disabling cognitive deficit.
• Primer — An elementary textbook designed for learning how to read and write. In clinical psycholinguistics, neuropsychology, and speech therapy, the structure of a primer is used as a standardized assessment tool to determine basic linguistic competencies. It serves to identify early signs of developmental dyslexia, agraphia, or alexia. It is also integrated into language re-education protocols for aphasic patients who suffered vascular or traumatic lesions in cortical brain areas dedicated to language.
• Primers — The plural form of the neuter noun 'abecedar', designating multiple elementary textbooks or alphabetical learning sets. In language rehabilitation clinics, pediatric speech therapy, and neuropsychology, utilizing various types of primers (visual, tactile, or phonetic) allows the adaptation of the therapeutic strategy to the patient's specific cognitive or sensory deficit.
• Abeona developmental archetype — A mythological and cultural eponym transposed into developmental psychology and pediatric psychoanalysis (the Abeona complex, syndrome, or archetype). The concept denotes the protective maternal instinct of guiding and facilitating a child's first independent steps outside the secure family space. In the semiology of attachment, pathological manifestations of the Abeona type refer to severe parental separation anxiety (neurotic overprotection) that blocks the infant's motor and cognitive autonomy development.
• Abkhaz (language) — The language spoken by the Abkhaz people, belonging to the Northwest Caucasian language family; as an adjective, it represents the feminine form of the word 'abhaz'. In neuropsychology and speech pathology (aphasiology), the highly complex grammatical structure of the Abkhaz language (characterized by a massive consonant inventory and polysynthetic verbal structure) has served as a clinical model for studying how the human brain processes difficult sounds after brain trauma or strokes.
• Barely / Scarcely — An adverb with a restrictive or temporal meaning, indicating an action performed with great effort, difficulty, to a minimal degree, or at an immediate prior moment. In neuropsychological and speech therapy assessments, the term is used clinically as a qualitative marker in observation files to describe the severe limitations of patients with aphasia, dyspnea, or motor trauma (e.g., patients who can barely pronounce simple words or can scarcely maintain their balance).
• Abilene paradox — A term used in medical psychology, clinical risk management, and bioethics primarily through the 'Abilene Paradox'; it describes a situation where a medical team or a group of specialists collectively decides on a wrong course of action (e.g., a risky treatment plan), even though individually each member believes it is incorrect, due to the fear of challenging the apparent consensus of the group.
• Abyssal / Profound — A quality belonging to the abyss or relating to the deepest zones of the oceans (usually below 2000-3000 meters), characterized by total darkness, immense pressure, and low temperatures. In psychology, the term qualifies the hidden elements of the human psyche, originating from the deepest layers of the unconscious.
