#hypertrophy
- Acromegalic — A synonymous variant of the adjective acromegal; relating to acromegaly, manifesting its symptoms, or affected by the hypersecretion of somatotropin. As a noun, the term defines a male individual presenting the clinical picture of the disease, marked by hypertrophy of the facial bones, hands, and feet secondary to a pituitary adenoma.
- Acromegaly — A chronic neuroendocrine disease caused by a pathological hypersecretion of growth hormone (somatotropin) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) in adulthood, after the closure of epiphyseal growth plates. The condition is characterized by the exaggerated enlargement of skeletal extremities (hands, feet), hypertrophy of facial bones (prognatism, prominent brow ridges), soft tissue thickening, macroglossia, and secondary severe cardiac or metabolic dysfunctions.
- Acropachydermia — A rare pathological clinical condition, congenital or acquired, characterized by the symmetric hypertrophic thickening of the skin and soft tissues of the extremities (hands and feet), often associated with subperiosteal osteoarticular deformities of the phalanges. This severe structural phenomenon impairs cutaneous elasticity and fine joint mobility, frequently manifesting within complex neuroendocrine syndromes, such as pachydermoperiostosis (Touraine-Solente-Golé syndrome), or as a secondary paraneoplastic reaction in chronic pulmonary diseases.
- Adenomegaly — An hypertrophic enlargement of the volume of a gland or a lymph node, occurring as a reaction to an inflammatory, infectious, immune, or neoplastic process in the body. This structural phenomenon manifests clinically through palpable swellings in regions such as cervical, axillary, or inguinal, requiring imaging and histopathological investigations to determine the underlying cause.
- Adenoncosis — A rare pathological condition or niche clinical term designating the enlargement, swelling, or generalized hypertrophy of a gland or a lymph node, without necessarily implying a structural malignant process. This phenomenon occurs as a result of benign cellular proliferation, prolonged stasis of glandular secretions, or within chronic inflammatory reactions of diverse etiology.
- Angiomegaly — An abnormal, permanent, and pathological enlargement of the caliber or volume of a blood vessel (artery or vein) or a major lymphatic trunk. This structural phenomenon of well-defined vascular hypertrophy can occur due to congenital wall defects, prolonged chronic circulatory stasis, or hemodynamic pressure modifications, weakening the tissues and increasing the risk of secondary functional insufficiency.
- Auxesis — A physiological process of growth in volume and size of plant or animal cells, achieved through structural extension and accumulation of water or cytoplasmic substances, without being accompanied by cell division (mitosis).
