• To abound — To exist in great plenty, to be found in large quantities or in large numbers; to be very rich in something.
• To approach — To directly address a person to initiate a conversation, negotiation, or social interaction; to begin to study, discuss, treat, or solve a complex problem, a theoretical topic, or a critical situation; (original maritime sense) to bring a vessel into direct contact with another vessel or the shore, either voluntarily or due to an accidental collision.
• Abuse does not invalidate just use — A fundamental principle in bioethics, pharmacovigilance, and clinical toxicology stating that 'a conclusion from the abuse of a thing to its use is not valid'. In medicine, it means that the prohibition or condemnation of a useful drug or medical treatment (e.g., opioids for severe pain) is not justified simply because some patients or individuals abuse it.
• At random / Incoherently — A Latin phrase literally translated as 'from this one and from that one' or 'about this and about that'. In clinical psychology, neurology, and psychiatry, it describes a chaotic, incoherent speech with no logical connection between ideas, typical of patients experiencing delirium episodes, dementia, acute mental confusion, or severe intoxication with psychoactive substances.
• From an intestate person — The complete legal and forensic Latin form for 'ab intestat', meaning 'coming from a person who died without a testament'. In post-mortem psychiatric expert evaluations, the term is central to analyzing the mental capacity and competence of individuals with neurodegenerative diseases (such as vascular dementia or Alzheimer's) to validate the legal distribution of property.
• From the egg / From the very beginning — A Latin phrase derived from Horace's writings, meaning literally 'from the egg'. In embryology and developmental toxicology, it refers to analyzing a biological process, cellular mechanism, or the action of a teratogenic agent (malformation-inducing toxin) traced right from the egg-cell (zygote) stage or from the moment of fertilization to fully map fetal development disruptions.
• From start to finish — A Latin phrase from Horace's Satires, literally meaning 'from the egg to the apples' (referring to the traditional course of a Roman banquet). In academic, medical, and psychological contexts, it is used metaphorically to describe an exhaustive, comprehensive, and chronological analysis of a phenomenon, pathology, or individual development, covering the entire spectrum from the absolute origin to the final phase of manifestation.
• Coarse woolen sheet — A rare regional term used in certain western areas of Romania to designate a large piece of thick woolen fabric or a coarse frieze blanket. In empirical rural health practices, this material (the abai) was heated near a stove and applied to the thorax of patients with respiratory conditions or to painful joints for its analgesic and sweat-inducing effects.
• Lampshade — A device mounted on a light fixture designed to direct, diffuse, or filter the light from a lamp to protect the eyes from the bulb's direct glare. In medical ergonomics, occupational health, and ophthalmology, using an appropriate lampshade is essential to prevent accommodative asthenopia (eye strain), reduce screen reflections, and optimize visual comfort in treatment or office spaces.
• Rustic wooden pestle — An extremely rare, archaic, and regional term attested in old northern Transylvanian glossaries, historically denoting a rudimentary wooden tool (a heavy pestle or crusher) used in peasant households or by local folk healers to pound and pulverize tree bark, fibrous roots, or animal fats intended for traditional ointments and empirical remedies.
• To alienate — An archaic medical and legal term meaning to alienate, transfer ownership of property, or, in a psychopathological sense, to cause the loss of mental faculties or sever a person's connection with reality. In 19th-century classical psychiatry, it was used to describe the process by which a patient lost sanity or became mentally alienated.
• Abalienation — The act of alienating or the state resulting from it; mental alienation, derangement of the mind, or loss of cognitive psychological faculties. In Latin medical terminology and early neurology textbooks, 'abalienatio mentis' designated a global collapse of intellectual functions, serving as a conceptual predecessor to the modern terms dementia, psychosis, or severe psychic dissociation.
• Abalienated — An archaic medical and legal term used to describe a person who has lost their mental faculties, sanity, or connection with reality; mentally alienated. In the context of historical forensic evaluations, being abalienated implied a lack of criminal responsibility and required the establishment of legal guardianship.
• Dazed / Stupefied — An old, regional, or archaic medical term previously used in Romanian rural areas to describe a state of bewilderment, severe dizziness, mental confusion, or altered consciousness (stupor). In early psychiatric semiology, the word qualified patients presenting an absent behavior, fixed stare, and pronounced psychomotor slowing, symptoms typical of post-ictal epileptic states, toxic encephalopathies, or catatonic episodes.
• Abandonment — The act of leaving, or permanently giving up on a person (child, partner), an asset, or an ongoing action. In clinical psychology and psychiatry, it is a central concept studied for its profound impact on emotional development, generating attachment traumas, severe anxiety, and persistent dysfunctional cognitive schemas.
• To abandon — To intentionally leave someone, breaking bonds of care or affection; to give up an activity, therapy, or goal. In behavioral medicine, it is frequently used to describe a situation where a patient prematurely discontinues an essential medical treatment or rehabilitation program.
• Patient abandonment — The act of abandoning; the deliberate desertion of a vulnerable individual (minor, chronically ill person, elderly person) who is unable to care for themselves. In forensic medicine and bioethics, abandonment constitutes a severe breach of the duty of medical or familial care, legally classified as a form of severe neglect abuse with direct vital implications.
• Abandoned — Having been left alone, deserted, or deprived of parental, medical, or emotional care; a clinical descriptor used for subjects who experienced a brutal severance of primary attachment bonds. Psychologically, an abandoned child or patient displays a major risk of developing anxiety-depressive disorders and borderline personality disorders.
• Abandonic — Exhibiting a pathological complex or fear of abandonment; relating to neurotic or defensive behaviors triggered by the fear of being left. An abandonic structure (or abandonic personality) tends to develop an anxious-dependent attachment, displaying extreme possessiveness or, conversely, a tendency to preemptively break off relationships for fear of being rejected.
• Abandonic individual — A person suffering from an abandonment complex and whose interpersonal relationships are dominated by a pathological fear of being left or rejected. In clinical settings, an abandonic individual frequently exhibits dysfunctional defense mechanisms, such as relational self-sabotage, extreme possessiveness, or constant demands for emotional reassurance.
