Definition
A destructive act, behavior, or impulse directed consciously or unconsciously by an individual against their own person, resulting in bodily injuries, self-mutilation, or suicide attempts. In immunology, the term metaphorically describes the pathological process where the immune system erroneously attacks the body's own healthy tissues (autoimmunity).
