• Since antiquity — The classical and correct Latin form for 'from ancient times' or 'since antiquity'. In toxicology, pharmacognosy, and medical ethics, it is used to emphasize that certain therapeutic effects, prohibitions (e.g., using poisons for political or medical purposes), or professional oaths have been in force and respected since the earliest times of human civilization.
• Abaca — A textile plant of the banana family (Musa textilis), cultivated in the Philippines, whose leaves yield a highly durable vegetable fiber (Manila hemp). In the field of medical and pharmaceutical materials, fine abaca fibers are utilized in moisture-resistant filtration layers, for manufacturing sterile medicinal tea bags, special laboratory filter papers, and certain biodegradable protective textiles.
• Ebony — A precious, highly exotic, dense, and hard wood, usually black, obtained from several tropical trees of the genus Diospyros (family Ebenaceae). In pharmacognosy and the history of pharmacy, extracts, shavings, and powder from ebony wood or its bark were historically used in preparing astringent and purifying remedies, while the wood itself was used to manufacture pharmaceutical mortars resistant to chemical corrosion.
• Abelia floribunda — An evergreen shrub species native to Mexico, remarkable for its reddish-pink tubular flowers and abundant blooming. In medical biochemistry and pharmacognosy, extracts obtained from the leaves and flowers of Abelia floribunda are studied to identify specific triterpenes and phenolic acids. These bioactive compounds are investigated in laboratory models to evaluate their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as their potential to reduce cellular oxidative stress biomarkers within the peripheral nervous system.
• Abientin / Abietic compound — A technical specialty term designating an organic compound, an acid derivative, or a resinous substance extracted or isolated from the cellular structures of conifers, specifically from the genus Abies (fir). In pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacognosy, abientin properties are analyzed due to their antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant potential, with acids of this class serving as precursors in synthesizing dermatological ointments and pulmonary inhalation products.
• Abies / Fir genus — A genus of coniferous trees in the family Pinaceae, comprising approximately 50 species generically known as firs. In pharmacognosy, phytotherapy, and historical clinical medicine, the genus Abies is recognized for producing oleoresins and volatile oils rich in pinene, limonene, and terebinthic acids, extensively used in manufacturing revulsive ointments, regenerating pectoral balms, and antiseptics for the respiratory and urinary tracts.
• Abies cephalonica / Greek fir — A species of fir native to the mountainous regions of Greece, commonly known as the Greek fir or Cephalonian fir. In traditional Mediterranean medicine and modern pharmacognosy, the resin and essential oils extracted from its needles are studied for their high alpha-pinene and beta-pinene concentration, historically used as a potent pulmonary antiseptic and joint anti-inflammatory agent for treating rheumatism.
• Abies grandis / Grand fir — A massive species of fir native to the coastal regions of Western North America, commonly known as the grand fir or giant fir. In Native American ethnomedicine and modern pharmacognosy, extracts from its bark and needles are recognized for their rich content of beta-pinene, beta-phellandrene, and limonene, historically utilized as a potent expectorant remedy in chronic pulmonary disorders, as well as a topical antiseptic for disinfecting deep external wounds.
• Abies pinsapo / Spanish fir — A rare species of fir native to the mountainous regions of southern Spain and northern Morocco, commonly known as the Spanish fir or pinsapo. In Mediterranean ethnomedicine and contemporary pharmacognosy, extracts obtained from its rigid, short needles are valued due to their unique concentration of antioxidant monoterpenes, abietic acids, and phenolic compounds, historically utilized as a vulnerary remedy for disinfecting open wounds, reducing joint inflammation, and alleviating infectious respiratory ailments.
• Abietaceae — An archaic botanical or systematic classification previously used in Romanian medical and pharmaceutical literature to designate the conifer family (currently Pinaceae). In old treatises of medical botany, the term grouped resinous trees such as the fir or spruce, recognized for their balsamic, respiratory antiseptic, and expectorant properties, being heavily utilized in traditional medicinal syrups and anti-rheumatic ointments.
• Abietin — A resinous substance of diterpenic nature, historically extracted from the resin of certain conifer species (especially from the genus Abies). In early pharmacognosy and 19th-century academic folk medicine, it was used as an active ingredient in formulating vulnerary ointments, anti-rheumatic plasters, or as a balsamic stimulant for the respiratory mucous membranes, due to its antiseptic and healing properties.
• Aloes — A traditional pharmaceutical preparation obtained by evaporating and concentrating the juice extracted from the fleshy leaves of various aloe species (notably Aloe ferox or Aloe perfoliata). This dried, resinous, brownish-black extract was utilized in ancient medicine as a powerful purgative, stomachic tonic, or healing agent, holding a major structural weight in medieval elixir recipes.
• Bearberry — The scientific name for the bearberry (strugurele-ursului), a prostrate evergreen shrub in the family Ericaceae, widespread throughout subarctic and alpine regions of the Northern Hemisphere. In a structural and medicinal sense, the plant features leathery, obovate, dark green leaves and pinkish-white urn-shaped flowers, followed by bright red spherical berries; its leaves are highly valued in phytotherapy due to a high arbutin content, offering potent antiseptic properties for the urinary tract.
• Aspidium — A historical and pharmaceutical name assigned to a genus of ferns (modernly classified mostly under the genus Dryopteris), used in old medical terminology to designate the extract obtained from the rhizome of the male fern (Aspidium filix-mas); its structural compounds act as a potent anthelmintic, historically used in treating intestinal parasite infections.
• Asafoetida — A gummy resin obtained from the rhizomes and roots of perennial herbaceous plants of the genus Ferula (family Apiaceae), native to Iran and Afghanistan; it is structurally characterized by a strong, repulsive, sulfurous odor (resembling rotten garlic), but is widely used in Indian cuisine as a digestive spice (developing a pleasant aroma after cooking) and in traditional phytotherapy as an antispasmodic.
• Aster linosyris — The scientific name of the goldilocks aster, a perennial herbaceous plant in the Asteraceae family, native to Europe, North Africa, and Central Asia; it grows in dry, limestone habitats and is unique among European asters due to the total absence of ray florets, the flower heads being composed exclusively of bright golden-yellow tubular florets.
• Astrognosy — An old descriptive branch of practical astronomy that deals with identifying, naming, and mapping constellations, as well as recognizing the position of the main stars and celestial bodies visible to the naked eye or rudimentary instruments. Unlike modern astrophysics, this classic field focuses strictly on sky orientation, traditional star charts, and celestial nomenclature.
• Atropa — A genus of perennial herbaceous plants in the family Solanaceae, the most famous being Atropa belladonna (deadly nightshade). Species within this genus have a complex biological structure and are highly toxic, containing a large amount of tropane alkaloids (atropine, scopolamine) with major parasympatholytic effects, utilized in the structural pharmaceutical industry and medicine.
