#fern

• Acrogenous — Regarding plants or structures; developing, growing, or originating exclusively at the tip, apex, or upper extremity, typical of vascular cryptogams like ferns.
• Acrostichoides — A taxonomic term utilized as a specific epithet in bilingual botanical nomenclature to describe a plant species (most frequently ferns, such as Polystichum acrostichoides) whose fronds, fertile structures, or sori arrangements strikingly resemble morphologically those of the genus 'Acrostichum'.
• Acrostichum — A genus of large, massive, and vibrant ferns belonging to the Pteridaceae family, characterized by their unique structural adaptation to saline environments, being the only ferns that grow natively in mangrove swamps and tropical and subtropical intertidal coastal zones. The genus is distinguished by large, pinnate, leathery (coriaceous) fronds and by the fact that fertile sporangia are not grouped into distinct sori but cover uniformly and densely the entire lower surface of the terminal pinnae.
• Acrostichum aureum — The bilingual scientific name of a specific mangrove fern species (commonly known as the golden leather fern), remarkable for its gigantic stature and extreme salinity tolerance. This halophytic plant presents large, leathery, golden-green fronds, with the fertile pinnae at the apex becoming completely covered underneath by a dense layer of sporangia of an intense golden-brown color, from which the specific epithet 'aureum' is derived.
• Adiantopsis — A genus of terrestrial ferns in the Pteridaceae family, Cheilanthoideae subfamily, structurally distributed primarily throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of South and Central America. These plants are recognized for their short, often erect rhizomes and elegant leaves, divided in a pedate, digitate, or pinnate manner, which feature marginal false indusia (sori protected by the reflexed leaf margin), possessing resilient structural adaptations in rocky habitats or forest edges.
• Adiantopsis pedata — A species of small terrestrial fern belonging to the Pteridaceae family, native to neotropical regions, particularly the Caribbean islands (such as Jamaica) and parts of South America. The plant is structurally recognized for its unique pedately divided leaves, with fine segments arranged like toes, attached to thin, black, shiny stipes (petioles), developing optimally in shaded limestone soils.
• Adiantopsis radiata — A species of tropical fern in the family Pteridaceae, genus Adiantopsis, structurally characterized by spectacular palmate fronds whose long, narrow pinnae are arranged radially, resembling the spokes of a wheel or the rays of a circle. This plant is native to the moist forests of Central and South America, being cultivated internationally in greenhouses and private botanical collections due to its unique aesthetic value.
• Adiantum — A genus of ferns in the family Pteridaceae, comprising approximately 250 species commonly known as maidenhair ferns; they are structurally characterized by black, shiny, hair-thin petioles supporting delicate fronds with flabelliform (fan-shaped) segments that shed water droplets. These plants are distributed globally across tropical and warm temperate zones, preferring damp rocks near waterfalls.
• Adiantum aethiopicum — A species of terrestrial, perennial fern in the Pteridaceae family, natively distributed across Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and islands in the Indian Ocean. This plant is structurally characterized by creeping rhizomes, slender, glossy, dark brown to black stems, and delicate, compound fronds made of small, rounded or fan-shaped pinnules, being cultivated internationally as an ornamental plant due to its aesthetic foliage.
• Adiantum capillusveneris — A species of perennial fern in the Pteridaceae family, commonly known as Southern maidenhair fern or Venus's hair, with a subcosmopolitan distribution in temperate, subtropical, and warm tropical regions of the world. The plant grows structurally on moist limestone rocks, cascading fine, bipinnate or tripinnate fronds with glossy-black petioles resembling strands of hair, historically used in traditional medicine and phytotherapy for its demulcent properties.
• Adiantum caudatum — A species of terrestrial and lithophytic fern belonging to the Pteridaceae family, distributed across the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Africa, popularly known as the walking fern. The plant is structurally recognized for its long, pinnate, and arching fronds, which frequently develop vegetative buds at the elongated tail-like apex; these buds root upon contact with the soil, enabling vegetative propagation and rapid colonial expansion in shaded, rocky habitats.
• Adiantum concinnum — A species of elegant tropical fern belonging to the Pteridaceae family, native to the neotropical regions of Central and South America (as well as Mexico and the Caribbean islands). This plant is structurally remarkable for its pendulous, bi- or tripinnate fronds, with delicate fan-shaped or rhombic pinnules attached to thin, shiny blackish-purple stipes and rachises, highly valued in greenhouses as a decorative ornamental plant.
• Adiantum cuneatum — A species of ornamental fern in the family Pteridaceae, also known by the synonymous taxonomic name Adiantum raddianum; it is structurally characterized by delicate, triangular fronds with small, wedge-shaped (cuneate) pinnae suspended on thin, black, shiny petioles. This plant, native to tropical regions of South America, is frequently cultivated globally as a houseplant due to its extremely decorative and airy foliage.
• Adiantum decorum — An exotic species of fern in the family Pteridaceae, genus Adiantum, structurally closely related to the common maidenhair fern; it is distinguished by vigorous, compact, and arched fronds of a deep green color, whose fan-shaped segments feature finely dentate margins and a slightly leathery texture. It is a plant native to the damp mountain forests of South America, appreciated in horticulture for its enhanced resilience in greenhouse landscape arrangements.
• Adiantum formosum — A species of large terrestrial fern in the Pteridaceae family, native to the rainforests and moist forests of eastern Australia and New Zealand. This plant develops structurally through deep, creeping rhizomes and produces finely divided, compound fronds that can reach heights of over one meter, supported by long, rigid, glossy-black petioles, cultivated ornamentally for its lush appearance.
• Adiantum hispidulum — A species of perennial fern in the Pteridaceae family, natively distributed across Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific islands. The plant is structurally characterized by its young fronds, which exhibit an attractive pink or bronze hue before turning green, and by the presence of fine, rough hairs (hispidulous) on the stems and foliar surface, being a popular choice for indoor gardens.
• Adiantum lunulatum — A species of terrestrial and lithophytic fern in the Pteridaceae family, structurally distributed throughout the tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and Australia, also known by the taxonomic synonym Adiantum philippense. The plant is structurally recognized for its pinnate fronds with asymmetrical, crescent-shaped or fan-shaped pinnules attached to thin, shiny black stipes, possessing the unique ability to develop proliferous buds at the frond apex that root upon soil contact.
• Adiantum macrophyllum — A species of tropical fern in the Pteridaceae family, native to the neotropical regions of Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean islands. This plant is structurally remarkable for its large pinnate fronds with opposite, triangular or ovate leaflets of a leathery texture, which display a spectacular shade of pinkish-salmon or copper when young, gradually turning into a deep green at maturity.
