- Arakcheyevism — An attitude or regime of governance characterized by brutal despotism, blind and formal military discipline, suffocating bureaucracy, and repressive police measures. The term derives from the name of the Russian tsarist general and minister Aleksey Arakcheyev (1769–1834), who enforced harsh military settlements in the Russian Empire, becoming a universal symbol of tyrannical administrative control devoid of flexibility or humanity.
- Arbitrary — Left to the free choice or whim of someone, without being based on a law, a fixed rule, or an objective necessity; despotic, abusive, unjustified. In linguistics and philosophy, the term describes a conventional connection established by simple social agreement, such as the relationship between the linguistic sign and the reality denoted.
- Arbitrarily — A rare archaic and regional adverbial form meaning 'arbitrarily'; an action carried out at one's own whim, without considering laws, fixed rules, logic, or objective necessities. It was used in old legal texts or political pamphlets to describe the abusive or despotic behavior of local authorities.
- Arbitrary act — Archaic form and old regional variant (found sporadically in early legal translations or administrative manuscripts) for 'arbitrarietate' or 'arbitrary act'; a deed, decision, or state of affairs based on abuse, despotism, and the whim of an authority, lacking legal or logical foundation.
- Arbitrariness — Archaic form or transitional neologism (sporadically used in the 19th century under the direct influence of Romance languages) for the term 'arbitrarietate'; the manifestation or character of an action taken exclusively at the whim of an authority, without respecting written laws.
- Autocrat — An absolute ruler or monarch who holds unlimited power, dictatorial governance, and supreme authority in a state, exercising their prerogatives without constitutional control or legal opposition. As an adjective, it describes an authoritative, tyrannical, and oppressive behavior, person, or management style, characterized by imposing one's own decisions without consulting group members or citizens.
- Autocratic (archaic) — An archaic, traditional, or literary form for the adjective autocratic; specific to an autocrat or the absolutist way of ruling from past eras. It is primarily used in historical texts, old documents, or literary analyses to describe the pomp, abuses, or decrees of an absolute monarch or imperial tyrant.
- Authoritarianist — A person who supports, promotes, or implements authoritarianism as a method of governance or leadership; an adherent of a dictatorial political system or of coercive methods of enforcing power. As an adjective, it describes a behavior, attitude, or doctrine specific to proponents of strict control, characterized by the rejection of egalitarian dialogue and the demand for unconditional obedience.
