• Abuse does not invalidate just use — A fundamental principle in bioethics, pharmacovigilance, and clinical toxicology stating that 'a conclusion from the abuse of a thing to its use is not valid'. In medicine, it means that the prohibition or condemnation of a useful drug or medical treatment (e.g., opioids for severe pain) is not justified simply because some patients or individuals abuse it.
• Since antiquity — The classical and correct Latin form for 'from ancient times' or 'since antiquity'. In toxicology, pharmacognosy, and medical ethics, it is used to emphasize that certain therapeutic effects, prohibitions (e.g., using poisons for political or medical purposes), or professional oaths have been in force and respected since the earliest times of human civilization.
• From the beginning — A Latin phrase meaning 'from the beginning' or 'from first principles'. In biochemistry and computational pharmacology, it refers to calculations or simulations based strictly on the laws of quantum mechanics, without relying on preexisting empirical data (e.g., ab initio protein folding). In forensic medicine, it describes an act, toxic exposure, or pathological condition present from the very start.
• Abaca — A textile plant of the banana family (Musa textilis), cultivated in the Philippines, whose leaves yield a highly durable vegetable fiber (Manila hemp). In the field of medical and pharmaceutical materials, fine abaca fibers are utilized in moisture-resistant filtration layers, for manufacturing sterile medicinal tea bags, special laboratory filter papers, and certain biodegradable protective textiles.
• Ebony — A precious, highly exotic, dense, and hard wood, usually black, obtained from several tropical trees of the genus Diospyros (family Ebenaceae). In pharmacognosy and the history of pharmacy, extracts, shavings, and powder from ebony wood or its bark were historically used in preparing astringent and purifying remedies, while the wood itself was used to manufacture pharmaceutical mortars resistant to chemical corrosion.
• The Aban (illness entity) — An extremely rare archaic term attested in old Balkan apocryphal writings or healing manuscripts, denoting the symbolic or demonic personification of an acute febrile illness or a severe muscle spasm. In medieval folk medicine, diseases were frequently labeled with strange proper names (such as Abanul) to facilitate medical exorcism rituals and charms aimed at driving away pain.
• Abason (illness entity) — A rare archaic and mythological term found in medieval superstitions and magic-medical manuscripts of Southern Europe, representing the demonic personification of an acute mental illness or furious delirium. In ancient empirical medicine, severe epileptic seizures or psychotic episodes were often attributed to possession by Abason, with healing attempted through charms, exorcisms, and fumigations with sedative plants.
• Abd el-Krim — Moroccan military and political leader (1882-1963) during the Rif War; his forces and civilian populations were among the first historical targets of large-scale chemical warfare (mustard gas), making this a milestone case in military toxicology and long-term chemical weapon pathology.
• Abelia genus — A genus of ornamental flowering shrubs in the family Caprifoliaceae, native to East Asia and Mexico. In pharmaceutical botany, toxicology, and neuropsychiatry, extracts from Abelia species are studied for their content of biologically active secondary metabolites (iridoid glucosides, polyphenols). These compounds display antioxidant and neuroprotective therapeutic potential, being clinically investigated in experimental models to reduce oxidative stress in neurodegenerative diseases or alleviate neurosomatic anxiety symptoms.
• Abelia chinensis — The type species of the Abelia genus, native to China, characterized by dense and fragrant inflorescences. In medical biochemistry and phytotherapy, the species is intensely researched for isolating rare bioactive metabolites, such as iridoid glycosides and natural phenolic acids. These compounds are of significant interest in neuroprotection due to their experimentally proven capacity to mitigate neuronal cell degradation caused by free radicals, studied as adjuvants in countering oxidative stress within degenerative or cognitive pathologies.
• Abelia engleriana — A shrub species belonging to the Abelia genus, remarkable for its characteristic funnel-shaped flowers and high biological adaptability. In experimental phytotherapy, pharmacognosy, and toxicology, the species is monitored for its chemical profile rich in flavonoids and terpenic compounds. These metabolites are clinically studied in laboratory models to evaluate analgesic and peripheral anti-inflammatory effects, as well as the capacity to reduce stress-induced painful somatizations at the neuro-muscular level.
• Abelia floribunda — An evergreen shrub species native to Mexico, remarkable for its reddish-pink tubular flowers and abundant blooming. In medical biochemistry and pharmacognosy, extracts obtained from the leaves and flowers of Abelia floribunda are studied to identify specific triterpenes and phenolic acids. These bioactive compounds are investigated in laboratory models to evaluate their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as their potential to reduce cellular oxidative stress biomarkers within the peripheral nervous system.
• Abelia triflora — A large shrub species native to the Himalayan mountain region, characterized by flowers often arranged in clusters of three and an intense fragrance. In experimental phytotherapy and phytochemical research, Abelia triflora is recognized for its content of secoiridoid glycosides and complex phenolic derivatives. These natural constituents are clinically studied in experimental neuroprotection models for their potential to reduce neuroinflammation and stabilize cellular metabolic homeostasis in the brain.
• Abelia uniflora — A shrub species belonging to the Abelia genus, native to China, characterized by solitary flowers borne on unique peduncles. In clinical biochemistry and pharmacognosy, extracts from Abelia uniflora are studied for isolating biologically active secondary metabolites, specifically cyclic monoterpenes and organic acids. These natural constituents exhibit neuroprotective and antioxidant potential, being experimentally researched in laboratory models to protect neuronal cell membranes against lipid peroxidation-induced degeneration.
• Abeliophyllum genus — A monotypic botanical genus in the family Oleaceae, represented exclusively by the species Abeliophyllum distichum (Korean white forsythia). In pharmaceutical botany, phyto-neurosciences, and toxicology, extracts from the aerial organs of this plant are intensively studied for their high concentration of phenylethanoid glycosides, flavonoids, and verbascoside compounds. These secondary metabolites display potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties, being investigated in vitro and in vivo for their ability to mitigate neuroinflammation, inhibit acetylcholinesterase, and protect neuronal cells against oxidative stress-induced degradation in degenerative cognitive pathologies.
• Abientin / Abietic compound — A technical specialty term designating an organic compound, an acid derivative, or a resinous substance extracted or isolated from the cellular structures of conifers, specifically from the genus Abies (fir). In pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacognosy, abientin properties are analyzed due to their antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant potential, with acids of this class serving as precursors in synthesizing dermatological ointments and pulmonary inhalation products.
