#Poaceae

• Agropyron — The scientific name (in Latin) for a genus of perennial herbaceous plants in the grass family (Poaceae), popularly known in Romanian as 'pir' (wheatgrass / couch grass). These plants are characterized by long, creeping, and branched rhizomes, possessing a huge capacity for adaptation and spreading; they are often considered difficult weeds to control in crops, but also valuable species for stabilizing sandy soils or as forage.
• Bentgrass — The scientific name (in Latin) for a large and cosmopolitan genus of herbaceous plants in the grass family (Poaceae), popularly known in Romanian as 'iarba câmpului'. These grasses feature fine-textured leaves and loose, spreading panicle inflorescences; they are highly valuable in agriculture as pasture forage and in landscaping for establishing premium turfgrass resistant to close mowing.
• Alpine bentgrass — A species of perennial herbaceous plants within the genus Agrostis, family Poaceae, structurally adapted to high mountain and alpine climates. This grass grows in small, dense tufts on alpine meadows, rocky ridges, or screes, playing a crucial ecological role in preventing soil erosion in high-altitude zones and serving as forage for wild alpine fauna.
• Cloud grass — A species of annual herbaceous plants within the genus Agrostis, family Poaceae, native to the Iberian Peninsula and northwest Africa, popularly known as cloud grass. This plant is highly prized in horticulture and landscape design due to its spectacular, extremely fine, branched, and delicate inflorescences that create a cloud-like or misty visual effect above the ground; it is frequently utilized in dried flower arrangements.
• Pretty bentgrass — A species of herbaceous plants within the genus Agrostis, family Poaceae, valued for its fine and delicate aesthetic appearance. This decorative grass is characterized by compact tufts, narrow filiform leaves, and slender, open panicle inflorescences; it is occasionally used in landscape design, rock gardens, or as a component in ornamental turfgrass mixtures for partially shaded areas.
• Rock bentgrass — A species of perennial herbaceous plants within the genus Agrostis, family Poaceae, native to the mountainous regions of Europe (including the Carpathian Mountains). This grass grows in low, dense tufts on stony substrates, cliffs, screes, and alpine meadows with shallow, acidic soils; it is highly resistant to frost, strong winds, and drought, playing a major ecological role in stabilizing high-altitude soils.
• Creeping bentgrass — A species of perennial herbaceous plants within the genus Agrostis, family Poaceae, characterized by producing long, creeping stolons that form an extremely dense, fine, and elastic green carpet. Due to its remarkable rapid regeneration capacity and tolerance to very low mowing, it is widely utilized worldwide for establishing golf course greens, luxury sports fields, and high-quality ornamental turfgrass.
• Common bent — A species of perennial herbaceous plants within the genus Agrostis, family Poaceae, partially synonymous with Agrostis capillaris, popularly known as common bent or colonial bentgrass. It is a major component of natural meadows in temperate zones, highly valued due to its remarkable resilience to poor, acidic, or dry soils; it is intensively used in traditional ornamental turfgrass mixtures for parks and residential gardens.
• Agrostology — A branch of botany that deals with the systematic, morphological, ecological, and economic study of grasses (family Poaceae), including meadow grasses, cereals, and reeds. This discipline provides the scientific foundation for sustainable pasture management, forage crop breeding, and the ecological restoration of grassy habitats affected by erosion or overgrazing.
• Aira — A taxonomic genus of annual herbaceous plants within the Poaceae (Gramineae) family, structurally characterized by slender, thin stems and delicate inflorescences in the form of branched panicles, being adapted to dry, sandy, or siliceous soils. Natively distributed throughout the temperate regions of Eurasia and North Africa, these small-sized grasses hold special ecological importance in fixing fragile soils and as indicators of substrate acidity, with some species used in decorative dried flower arrangements due to their fine and persistent appearance.
• Aira caryophyllea — The scientific and taxonomic name of a specific species of dwarf annual grass, popularly known as 'silver hairgrass', remarkable for its silver or purplish, highly diffuse panicles that open in an elegant manner structurally reminiscent of the delicacy found within the Caryophyllaceae family. The plant develops slender stems, almost invisible within the meadow mass, functioning as a pioneer species that rapidly colonizes luminous clearings, eroded siliceous soils, and sand dune margins across continental Europe and Mediterranean regions.
• Aira elegans — The scientific and taxonomic name of a specific species of annual grass, popularly known as 'elegant hairgrass', remarkable for its extremely lax, delicate, and filiform-branched panicles whose small spikelets appear invisibly suspended in mid-air. This fragile herbaceous plant is native to the Mediterranean basin and southern Europe, functioning as a pioneer species perfectly adapted to sandy, dry, siliceous, or degraded soils, being valued in boutique horticulture and dried flower arrangements due to its fine, airy, and highly aesthetic structure.
• Alopecurus — A genus of perennial or annual herbaceous plants in the Poaceae (Gramineae) family, distributed across the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, popularly known as 'foxtail grass'. These grasses are structurally characterized by dense, cylindrical, spike-like, and silky inflorescences resembling an animal's tail, utilized as valuable forage plants in meadows or cultivated ornamentally.
• Alopecurus lanatus — The scientific Latin designation for a rare herbaceous plant species within the Alopecurus genus, Poaceae (Gramineae) family. This grass stands out structurally due to its dense, soft, and woolly (lanatus) hairs covering the leaf sheath and spike-like inflorescence, representing an excellent morphological adaptation for moisture conservation and protection against extreme thermal variations in its native habitats.
• Alopecurus pratensis — The scientific Latin designation for meadow foxtail, a perennial herbaceous plant species in the Poaceae (Gramineae) family, highly valuable for forage. This plant is structurally characterized by erect stems, smooth leaves, and dense cylindrical spike-like inflorescences of a silky grayish-green, distributed across moist and fertile meadows in temperate regions.
• Ammophila — A double taxonomic genus designating, in botany, a category of perennial grasses in the Poaceae family (marram grass) adapted to stabilizing maritime dunes, and in entomology, a genus of solitary hunting wasps in the Sphecidae family, known for their structural habit of burrowing nests into sandy substrates and feeding their larvae with chemically paralyzed caterpillars.
• Andropogon — A large genus of perennial herbaceous plants in the grass family (Poaceae), native to warm and temperate regions worldwide, commonly known as bluestem or beard grass. This structural botanical entity is characterized by erect, rigid culms and clustered spike-like inflorescences covered with long, silky, silvery hairs, playing a major ecological role in stabilizing prairie soils.
• Anthoxanthum — A genus of annual or perennial grasses in the family Poaceae, commonly known as vernal grass, notable for their dense spike-like panicles and a strong fragrance of coumarin released when dried.
• Arrhenatherum — A genus of perennial herbaceous plants within the Poaceae (Gramineae) family, native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, but widely introduced across temperate regions as a forage crop. The most notable species is the false oat-grass (Arrhenatherum elatius), a vigorous grass intensively utilized for hay production, recognized by its loose panicle inflorescences and characteristically awned spikelets.
• Arrhenatherum desertorum — A xerophytic species of perennial herbaceous plant within the Arrhenatherum genus, family Poaceae, ecologically adapted to arid, rocky, or semi-desert soils of the Mediterranean regions and the Middle East. It is characterized by rigid stems, narrow leaves with a protective waxy layer designed to reduce evapotranspiration, and a deep root system, holding crucial ecological importance for stabilizing eroded soils in warm climates.
