• Reef variant — A rare archaic, regional, or literary variant historically used to denote a reef, a rocky shelf, or a coral submarine structure located near the water surface. The term represents a transitional linguistic form borrowed directly from Mediterranean sources (such as Spanish 'arrecife' or Portuguese 'recife') in maritime travelogues and old maps from the 18th and 19th centuries.
