Dictionary of Materials Science and Electronic Engineering Standards
- Aquadag — A colloidal suspension of purified graphite in water or another suitable liquid, used technically as a high-temperature resistant lubricant or to create thin electrically conductive layers; also, it designates the conductive protective coating applied to the inner walls of cathode-ray tubes. This structural material helps collect secondary electrons and electrostatically shields precision components.
- Countersink — A mechanical device, machinery, or tool mounted on a machine tool (such as a drill press or milling machine), used for widening, deepening, or calibrating holes previously executed in metal, wood, or plastic. As an adjective, it describes any factor, substance, mechanism, or instrument fulfilling the structural function of increasing depth.
- Adapter — The feminine form of the noun adaptator, designating a part, technical device, or structural component capable of achieving mechanical or electrical connection, compatibility, or fit between two different systems. As an adjective, it describes an element, method, or function that serves to facilitate the process of adapting or adjusting an assembly.
- Mine ventilation — The totality of works, installations, and technical methods used to ensure the constant circulation of a fresh air stream in underground mining works, tunnels, or industrial buildings; continuous renewal of the atmosphere in an enclosed space aimed at diluting and evacuating harmful, explosive gases or toxic parasitic dust.
- Air vent — A technical device, component, or valve installed in a heating, hydraulic, or braking system for the purpose of automatically or manually eliminating air or gas bubbles trapped inside the circuits. It also designates any small opening or grille structurally designed to ensure passive ventilation of an enclosure.
- Aeronautical — Belonging to aeronautics or relating to aerial navigation, as well as the study, design, construction, and operation of aircraft. This term describes structural, regulatory, industrial, or scientific elements essential for vehicle flight within Earth's atmosphere, ranging from airplanes and helicopters to complex propulsion and control systems.
- To refine — 1. To separate a metallic mass, alloy, or molten glass from impurities using chemical, thermal, or electrolytic methods to increase its purity. 2. To thin wool or cotton fibers during processing. 3. A regional singular form for 'afină' (bilberry fruit).
- Binder — A substance, material, or binder that has the property of binding and uniting particles, granules, or small fragments from a powdery material, transforming them into a compact, solid, and coherent block. In an adjectival sense, it describes an element that causes, favors, or directly participates in a physico-chemical agglomeration process.
- Openwork crafting — The act of performing openwork and its result; the technical or manual process through which ajoure-style decorative patterns are made on fabric, clothing, leather, or architectural structures. This ornamental operation involves controlled perforation, lattice carving, or pulling threads from the weave to create symmetrical translucent motifs that aesthetically filter light.
- Brass-plated — Having been covered with a protective or decorative layer of brass through technical processes such as electroplating, electrolytic deposition, or thermal immersion; brass-plated. The term applies to various metallic parts made of iron, steel, or zinc to provide them with enhanced corrosion resistance and a refined aesthetic appearance similar to gold.
- Albedometer — A precision meteorological instrument consisting of two coupled pyranometers (one facing upward and one downward), used for the direct measurement of a surface's albedo by simultaneously determining global solar radiation and that reflected by the ground.
- Alcoholometry — A technical method and set of operations used to determine the concentration of ethyl alcohol in a hydroalcoholic mixture or a beverage. The process is based on measuring liquid density using an alcoholmeter or through precision refractometric and pycnometric methods, being essential in industrial quality control and custom duties.
- To ream — To enlarge, calibrate, or precisely finish a previously drilled cylindrical or conical hole in a piece of metal, wood, or other hard material, using a special tool called a reamer or on a boring machine. The purpose of this operation is to obtain a perfectly smooth inner surface with exact dimensions and minimal geometric tolerances to allow precise assembly of parts.
- To shot-peen — The act of transforming raw metal pieces into small spherical granules or pellets (shot) through melting, controlled casting, or mechanical calibration processes. In an extensive industrial sense, the term refers to shot peening or blasting a hard metallic surface by continuously bombarding it with steel or iron pellets, aiming to clean rust, remove burrs, or structurally harden the material.
- Bored — Having undergone the process of boring or reaming; a cylinder, tube, or mechanical part whose internal surfaces have been machined by cutting with a reamer to achieve high dimensional accuracy and superior smoothness. In an extended sense, it describes the state of a geometric hole calibrated according to rigorous technical tolerance standards.
- Alnico — A hard ferromagnetic alloy composed primarily of aluminum, nickel, and cobalt, to which varying percentages of iron, copper, or titanium may be added. This structural material is characterized by high remanent magnetic induction and excellent thermal stability, being widely used in industry for manufacturing permanent magnets for electric motors, audio speakers, and precision sensors.
- Alternator — A rotating electrical machine that transforms mechanical energy supplied by an internal combustion engine or another source of motion into electrical energy in the form of alternating current; an essential component of the charging system in modern vehicles.
- Forehearth — A reception basin or external refractory compartment situated in front of the taphole of a cupola or blast furnace, serving for the temporary collection, homogenization, and temperature maintenance of molten iron or liquid metal before casting. This structural element optimizes the metal smelting process by allowing lighter residual slag to separate at the surface.
- Anti-technical — Contrary to established technical standards, machinery operating rules, or industrial safety and efficiency specifications; opposing technical precision or spirit. It applies to incorrect procedures, faulty execution in engineering or construction, or a blatant lack of skill and knowledge in operating mechanical and technological systems, resulting in equipment degradation or the disruption of production processes.
- Switchgear — A complex assembly consisting of several structurally interconnected technical devices, instruments, and accessories, used for the control, switching, protection, or distribution of electrical energy or for executing a specific industrial operation. In common language, the term can describe the totality of equipment necessary for the operation of a laboratory or a high-power facility.
