Definition
An archaic and regional term used in the past to designate a servant, a farmhand, a domestic worker at a boyar estate, or, in an extended sense, a somber or mourning person (sometimes associated in folklore with someone leading a funeral procession or giving ritualistic signals). Within the old semantic structure of eastern subdialects, the word could also describe a quiet, sullen, or socially withdrawn individual.
