Asepsis
Definition
A prophylactic method of preventing microbial infections, consisting of preventing pathogenic germs from entering organisms, wounds, or surgical fields, achieved through the prior sterilization of medical instruments, dressings, and rigorous washing of the surgeon's hands. Unlike antisepsis, which destroys existing microbes, asepsis represents a set of rigorous preventive measures designed to ensure a total absence of live infectious agents.
