Definition
A legal representative or official envoy of a patriarch or the pope in Late Antiquity and the Byzantine Empire, tasked with managing diplomatic and religious relations at the imperial court; a high-ranking ecclesiastical legate. In a church administrative sense, the title also designated a secretary or chancellor responsible for drafting and transmitting official dogmatic decrees.
