Ampholyte
Definition
An electrolytic substance with an amphoteric character that can behave either as an acid or as a base, depending on the pH of the medium in which it is dissolved. In a structural sense, an ampholyte contains within its molecule groups capable of donating protons as well as groups capable of accepting protons, often forming amphions or zwitterions in aqueous solution.
