Alevi
Definition
A member of a heterodox, syncretic, and liberal religious and cultural community, derived from Shia Islam, primarily found in Turkey. Alevis do not use mosques or traditional pilgrimage; instead, they gather in houses of prayer called cemevis, where rituals include mystical music (saz) and the semah spiritual dance, strongly emphasizing humanism, Sufi mysticism, social tolerance, and gender equality.
