Definition
An honorable mention or secondary distinction awarded in academic, literary, or artistic contests to participants who, while not winning one of the main prizes (1st, 2nd, or 3rd), ranked immediately below them due to the high value of their work. Etymologically from Latin, it means the author 'came close' to the winner's circle.
