- Atavism — A biological phenomenon consisting of the reappearance in an organism of particular morphological or functional traits that have not manifested for several generations, but existed in its remote ancestors. Figuratively or psychologically, the term denotes the survival or resurrection of primitive habits, mentalities, instincts, or manifestations in the behavior of civilized humans or within the structure of a modern society.
- Atavistic — Pertaining to atavism, determined by atavism, or specific to it; exhibiting traits inherited directly from remote ancestors. Although in contemporary Romanian the predominant form recommended by academic standards is 'atavic', the variant 'atavistic' is occasionally used as a direct borrowing from Anglo-Saxon terminology or as a stylistic neologism in specialized literature to emphasize the primitive or ancestral character of a phenomenon.
