#spring ephemerals
- Wood anemone — A species of perennial herbaceous plant in the family Ranunculaceae, native to the temperate forests of Europe and Asia. Commonly known as the wood anemone, it grows in early spring, forming dense carpets before trees open their canopy. The plant features a horizontal underground rhizome, deeply divided trifoliate leaves, and a single solitary flower, pure white or slightly pinkish, with numerous yellow stamens in the center.
- Yellow wood anemone — A species of perennial herbaceous plant in the family Ranunculaceae, native to the temperate forests of Europe and Western Asia. Commonly known as the yellow wood anemone, this spring ephemeral plant grows rapidly in shaded and moist deciduous woodlands, standing out due to its horizontal rhizome, deeply divided cauline leaves, and its solitary or paired bright golden-yellow flowers.
- Three-leaved anemone — A species of perennial herbaceous plant in the family Riverunculaceae, native to deciduous forests in the mountainous regions of Southern and Central Europe (Alps, Apennines, Balkans). It is closely related to and visually resembles the common wood anemone (Anemone nemorosa) but is distinguished by its thicker, whitish rhizome, trifoliate cauline leaves with regular and symmetrically toothed segments, and solitary white flowers whose anthers are cream-white rather than yellow.
