- Anvil — A neologism of Anglo-Saxon origin used in medical and technical jargon to designate the anvil; in anatomy it represents the small bone in the middle ear (incus) involved in transmitting sound vibrations; in meteorology it describes the flat and extended shape of the upper part of a Cumulonimbus cloud (anvil cloud).
