- Artevelde — A surname of Flemish origin historically borne by a famous dynasty of political and military leaders from Ghent (Flanders) in the 14th century, most notably Jacob van Artevelde and his son, Philip van Artevelde. They led popular uprisings of the weavers' guilds against the influence of the French nobility, securing the commercial independence of the region during the Hundred Years' War; in the modern era, the name identifies Belgian higher education institutions and geographical landmarks.
