- Actinomycosis — A chronic, non-contagious structural bacterial infectious disease caused by anaerobic or microaerophilic bacteria of the genus Actinomyces (most commonly Actinomyces israelii), which normally colonize human mucous membranes. The condition manifests through the development of hard inflammatory granulomas and pseudotumoral suppurative abscesses that drain via fistulous tracts a characteristic pus containing yellow granules ('sulfur granules'), most frequently localizing cervicofacially (mouth and neck), thoracically, or abdominally following local trauma.
- Amentive — Relating to amentia or specific to this state; characterized by an acute mental confusion syndrome, total incoherence of thought, profound psycho-behavioral disorientation, and the presence of dream-like or hallucinatory elements. In a structural clinical sense, it describes neuropsychic manifestations temporarily destabilized due to severe somatic aggressions, such as intense febrile states or exogenous intoxications.
- Anesthetic — Inducing temporary insensitivity of the body or an anatomical zone; a chemical substance, medicinal compound, or therapeutic agent used to block nerve impulse transmission and cancel pain perception. Figuratively, it refers to an external factor, a state of mind, or a discourse that numbs the responsiveness, alertness, or moral conscience of a person.
- Anetoderma — A rare dermatological condition characterized by circumscribed cutaneous atrophy, caused by the localized loss of elastic tissue within the dermis. This structural phenomenon manifests clinically as soft, sac-like lesions that are depressible upon palpation, giving the skin a flaccid appearance resembling an empty pouch, occurring either primarily or secondarily to prior inflammatory processes.
- Aneuploid — Presenting aneuploidy; a cell, living organism, or organism whose chromosome complement differs from the normal one by the lack or addition of one or more individual chromosomes from the basic set. In a structural and clinical sense, this genetic phenomenon disrupts normal genic balance, causing severe phenotypic developmental anomalies, such as medically recognized genetic syndromes.
- Aneuria — A rare medical term used to describe a total absence, functional arrest, or severe pathological diminution of nerve impulse and conductivity within a peripheral nerve trunk. In a clinical and structural sense, this phenomenon disrupts the transmission of motor and sensory signals, often associated with severe traumatic injuries or acute degenerative processes of the nervous system.
- Aneurine — An old or synonymous scientific name for vitamin B1 (thiamine), an essential water-soluble organic compound that plays a structural coenzyme role in carbohydrate metabolism and in the optimal functioning of the central and peripheral nervous systems. A severe deficiency or absence of this substance in the body leads to the onset of beriberi and grave neurological or cardiovascular disorders.
- Antisepsis — A prophylactic or therapeutic method used to destroy, remove, or partially inhibit pathogenic microorganisms present on living tissues (skin, mucous membranes, wounds) through specific chemical substances. This essential procedure in surgery and dermatology prevents the development of infections and septic states, acting locally without altering the cellular integrity of the host organism, and differing from disinfection, which applies exclusively to inert surfaces.
- Antistreptolysin — The articulated form or lexical variant currently used for antistreptolysin O (ASLO); a specific antibody produced by the human immune system in response to infection with group A beta-hemolytic streptococci. This serological protein neutralizes streptolysin O (a hemolytic toxin released by the bacterium) and is quantitatively determined in laboratories via the ASLO titer to diagnose post-streptococcal complications such as acute rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis.
- Aspermatic — Suffering from aspermatism or lacking semen; relating to the complete absence of secretion or ejaculation of seminal fluid; (in an extended structural sense) containing or producing no male reproductive cells.
