- Aesculus — A genus of woody plants, deciduous trees, and shrubs belonging to the Sapindaceae family (formerly Hippocastanaceae), distributed throughout the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. These species are structurally characterized by palmate-compound leaves, large erect thyrsus-like inflorescences, and globose, often spiny capsular fruits containing large seeds popularly known as chestnuts.
