#bracts
- Acanthaceae — The large botanical family of dicotyledonous plants (Acanthaceae) within the Lamiales order, comprising hundreds of genera and thousands of species of herbs, shrubs, and vines, primarily distributed across tropical and subtropical global regions. Morphologically, these plants are characterized by simple, opposite leaves, spike- or raceme-type inflorescences equipped with large, often intensely colored bracts, and dehiscent capsule fruits remarkable for their explosive seed expulsion mechanism.
- Acanthiflorous — A plant morphological term used as an adjective to describe a plant whose flowers or inflorescences are equipped with spines, thorns, or sharp rigid bracts. This anatomical characteristic is frequently found in species of the Asteraceae family (such as thistles) or the Acanthaceae family, where the prickly elements surrounding the corolla serve as a protective barrier for reproductive organs against harmful insects and herbivores.
- Aechmea fasciata — The most widely cultivated species of the genus Aechmea, an epiphytic plant native to Brazil, remarkable for its grey-green leaves decorated with transverse bands of silvery trichomes. It produces a spectacular globose inflorescence composed of bright pink bracts with serrated edges, from which small blue flowers emerge, turning purple as the plant matures.
- Ajuga pyramidalis — A species of perennial herbaceous flowering plant in the mint family Lamiaceae, commonly known as pyramidal bugle. This small alpine plant is characterized by its dense, erect, pyramid-shaped or conical inflorescence, composed of large, leafy bracts that are often tinged with purple or violet and partially obscure the pale blue tubular flowers, growing natively in mountainous and subalpine regions on acidic soils and shaded meadows.
- Alloplectus capitatus — The scientific name of a representative species in the genus Alloplectus, an exotic perennial plant in the family Gesneriaceae, native to the mountainous regions of Colombia, Venezuela, and Peru. The species is characterized by erect stems, large, velvety dark green leaves covered in fine hairs, and produces compact, capitate (head-like) inflorescences consisting of yellow tubular flowers surrounded by large, persistent, deep maroon-red bracts.
- Aphelandra nitens — An exotic plant species in the genus Aphelandra, native to the tropical jungles of Colombia. It is highly renowned in horticulture due to its spectacular leaves, which feature a leathery texture and an intense metallic gloss, deep bronze-green on the upper surface and rich purple underneath, complemented by a fiery red inflorescence.
