- Aquaplaning — A dangerous physical and hydrodynamic phenomenon occurring when a vehicle or aircraft rolls over a water-covered surface, consisting of a total loss of tire adhesion due to the formation of a liquid film between the wheel and the road. This structural loss of direct contact negates braking and steering efficiency, leading to a loss of vehicle control.
- Aerodynamic — Relating to aerodynamics, concerning the motion of air and gases relative to solid bodies; having a fluid and optimized geometric shape, specially designed to minimize the drag resistance opposed by air during movement. It is widely applied in the design of aircraft, high-speed vehicles, and high-performance sports equipment.
- Alpax — A commercial or technical designation attributed to a cast aluminum-silicon alloy (silumin), typically containing between 10% and 13% silicon; a very lightweight metallic material that stands out structurally due to its excellent fluidity in a molten state, low contraction upon solidification, and high resistance to corrosion. In industry, it is widely utilized for manufacturing complex cast components for automotive engines, aviation, and pump casings.
- Wheelbase — The horizontal geometric distance measured between the centerlines of the extreme front and rear axles or wheels of a vehicle (car, truck, locomotive). This fundamental structural design parameter directly influences directional stability, maneuverability, turning radius, axle weight distribution, and the useful volume of the vehicle's interior cabin.
- Anti-locking — The act of preventing the locking of a mechanism, technical system, or wheels, and its result; a technological or electronic process that ensures the continuous mobility and functioning of mechanical components under pressure. In the automotive industry, the term defines the primary function of the anti-lock braking system (ABS), which prevents total wheel immobilization during emergency braking to maintain steering control.
- Anti-squat — Preventing or mitigating pitch-up or front-end lift (the tendency of a vehicle or aircraft to lift its front during acceleration or takeoff); a technical device or structural suspension geometry designed to maintain stability along the longitudinal axis. In automotive and aeronautical engineering, this effect guarantees optimal tire-to-ground contact and prevents loss of aerodynamic control.
- Antifreeze — A liquid chemical substance (usually based on ethylene glycol or propylene glycol) which, when added to water in the cooling systems of internal combustion engines or industrial installations, considerably lowers its freezing point and prevents structural damage to pipes due to ice expansion; antifreeze. As an adjective, it describes the property of a compound to prevent the solidification of fluids at low temperatures.
- Antiknock rating — A structural property of a liquid fuel to resist detonation, meaning rapid and explosive auto-ignition within the cylinders of a spark-ignition engine; detonation resistance. It represents an essential technical characteristic evaluated by the octane number, guaranteeing optimal thermal efficiency and the protection of internal mechanical components.
- Tires — The plural form of the noun anvelopă; a set of elastic rubber tires intended for mounting on vehicle wheels to ensure traction; in an architectural sense, the totality of exterior peripheral elements making up the thermal barrier and insulation of buildings.
- Ignition — The act of igniting and its result; a physico-chemical process of triggering the combustion of a material or fuel mixture. In mechanical engineering, it defines the mechanical or electronic system that generates the spark necessary for the internal combustion engine's operation, while in medicine, it is popularly used to denote an acute, febrile, and severe inflammation of an organ.
- Self-diagnosis — A diagnosis established by an automated technical system, an electronic device, or a person upon themselves; the process and result of determining an operational or pathological state through autonomous investigation and internal analysis.
- Electric car — A rare technical neologism used to designate a car fully propelled by electric motors powered by its own rechargeable batteries; a modern electric vehicle capable of autonomous driving.
