• Bristling — The act of bristling or becoming like a hedgehog and its result; a process through which the surface of a material, a fabric, or hair strands become rough, rigid, bristly, or raised upward, structurally recalling the appearance of hedgehog spines. In metallurgy or mechanics, the term can describe the formation of small asperities, burrs, or sharp irregularities on a part's surface due to faulty thermal or mechanical processing.
• Roughening — The act of roughening or harshening and its result; a process through which a surface loses its smoothness and becomes rugged, or through which a taste acquires an astringent note. In a figurative sense, it represents an increase in severity, requirements, or intensity of rules, punishments, or weather conditions; a functional synonym for intensification or tightening.
