#aspergillus
- Aflatoxins — A group of highly toxic and carcinogenic mycotoxins produced by certain molds of the Aspergillus genus (especially Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus). These substances frequently contaminate poorly stored agricultural commodities like peanuts, corn, or grains under warm and humid conditions, posing a major hepatotoxic risk.
- Aspergillus — A popular name or unofficial singular form used for microscopic fungi of the genus Aspergillus, recognized for the black, green, or yellow mold they form on food, damp walls, or plant debris; in a medical or industrial context, it refers to the conidiophore structure of the fungus, which visually resembles an instrument used in religious rituals for sprinkling holy water (aspergillum).
- Aspergillus molds — A plural vernacular or medical term designating microscopic fungi (molds) of the genus Aspergillus, structurally characterized by conidiophores with an apical vesicle bearing radiating sterigmata; these saprophytic fungi are ubiquitous in the environment and can cause severe opportunistic infections (aspergillosis) or pulmonary allergic reactions in immunocompromised organisms.
- Aspergilliform — Having the shape or appearance of an aspergillum (a holy water sprinkler or an Aspergillus head); an anatomical or microscopic structure provided with filaments, hairs, or projections radiating around a central axis, reminiscent of the conidial head of the Aspergillus mold.
- Aspergilloma — A pseudotumoral fungal mass, appearing as a ball or conglomerate, developed by the colonization of fungi from the Aspergillus genus (especially Aspergillus fumigatus) within a pre-existing pulmonary cavity (such as those left by tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, or air cysts). Also known as a fungus ball, it develops without invading the surrounding lung tissue, but can cause severe hemoptysis by eroding adjacent blood vessels.
- Aspergillosis — A generic name given to a group of human or animal infections or allergic reactions caused by molds of the Aspergillus genus; a condition transmitted through the inhalation of spores present in the air, manifesting under various clinical forms, from hypersensitivity reactions (such as allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis) to severe, potentially fatal invasive forms in immunocompromised patients.
