#armillary sphere

• Armillary — Formed of interconnected circles, rings, or metallic bands; a term used primarily to describe an armillary sphere, an ancient astronomical instrument consisting of an assembly of rings representing the main circles of the celestial sphere (the equator, ecliptic, meridians), used in antiquity and the renaissance for determining celestial coordinates and illustrating planetary motion. As a noun, it defines the object itself, a classical symbol of cosmic knowledge and navigation.
• Armillary — The feminine form of the adjective 'armilar'; having a ringed structure or being composed of multiple concentric circles. It is used almost exclusively in the phrase 'armillary sphere', defining the ancient astronomical apparatus used as a three-dimensional map of the sky, but can also describe other decorative or geometric elements with a similar appearance.
