#arctos

• Arctos — A word of Greek origin meaning 'bear'; universally utilized in modern zoology as a specific epithet in the scientific name of the brown bear (Ursus arctos). In classical astronomy and mythology, the term referred to the constellations Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, symbolically indicating the northern polar regions of the celestial vault (the Arctic region).
• Arctostaphylos — A genus of higher plants in the Ericaceae family, comprising approximately 60 species of evergreen, low-growing or trailing shrubs, predominantly distributed in the mountainous and coastal regions of western North America. The main structural characteristic of these plants is their smooth, glossy, deep reddish-brown bark, leathery leaves, and globose fruits resembling small red or brown berries, commonly known as manzanitas or bearberries.
• Arctostaphylos nevadensis — An endemic species of trailing shrub in the genus Arctostaphylos, commonly known as the pinemat manzanita. The plant structurally grows in dense mats at high elevations in the Cascade and Sierra Nevada mountains of western North America, featuring flexible branches that root upon soil contact, small, shiny green elliptical leaves, and urn-shaped white or pink flowers, acting as an essential ecological component for stabilizing eroded alpine soils.
• Pointleaf manzanita — A species of evergreen, erect shrub in the family Ericaceae, native to the arid and mountainous regions of Mexico and the southwestern United States, commonly known as pointleaf manzanita. In a structural-botanical sense, this plant is adapted to extreme drought and wildfires, featuring smooth, deep mahogany-red bark, rigid, elliptic leaves with a sharp or pungent tip, and small, round berries resembling miniature apples, which serve as a critical food source for local wildlife.
• Bearberry — The scientific name for the bearberry (strugurele-ursului), a prostrate evergreen shrub in the family Ericaceae, widespread throughout subarctic and alpine regions of the Northern Hemisphere. In a structural and medicinal sense, the plant features leathery, obovate, dark green leaves and pinkish-white urn-shaped flowers, followed by bright red spherical berries; its leaves are highly valued in phytotherapy due to a high arbutin content, offering potent antiseptic properties for the urinary tract.
