• Archaism — Current synonymous form for 'arhaism' (archaism); a word, expression, grammatical, syntactic structure, or phonetic trait that has fallen out of current use among the speakers of a language, representing a past stage of its evolution. In literature, it is consciously used by authors as a stylistic device to evoke a historical atmosphere, a bygone era, or to lend solemnity to the text.
