- Archaic — Belonging to remote, ancient historical eras, from the beginnings of a civilization or culture; obsolete, out of current usage, but preserved as historical evidence. In linguistics, it defines words, grammatical forms, or phonetic patterns specific to older stages of a language. In art history, it refers to early styles (such as the Archaic period of Ancient Greece, 7th–6th centuries BC).
