#apology
- Amende honorable — A public, solemn, and humiliating confession of a fault, accompanied by a request for forgiveness from the guilty party; historically (specifically in old French law), it was an infamous penalty whereby the condemned had to symbolically recognize their crime in public, barefoot and holding a torch, asking forgiveness from God, the king, and justice. In a modern sense, it denotes a dignified retraction of slanderous statements.
- Apologetic — Containing an apology, pertaining to the systematic defense and praise of a doctrine, idea, or belief; characterized by arguments designed to justify or rehabilitate a theological or ideological position against criticism. Broadly, it describes a distinctly laudatory tone or text, often lacking objectivity due to attachment to the defended cause.
- Apologeticism — An excessive attitude or tendency to praise, defend, and justify at any cost a certain doctrine, political system, leader, or institution, consciously ignoring its errors or flaws; apologetic passion taken to extremes. In modern ideological criticism, the term carries a pejorative connotation, denoting the absence of objective critical spirit in favor of partisan propaganda.
- Apologeticism — A critical attitude or informal doctrine marked by the excessive and programmatic use of apologies in public discourse; the structural tendency to reduce objective analysis to a series of subjective justifications or partisan praises of a system. In text hermeneutics, the concept describes a methodological flaw where the researcher transforms their scientific exposition into a blind plea.
