#antitoxin
- Antibotulinic — Neutralizing, combating, or destroying the botulinum toxin produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium; a medication, immunological serum, or specific antibody used in the emergency treatment of botulism. In a clinical sense, the antibotulinum serum blocks the neurotoxin from binding to peripheral nervous system receptors, preventing progressive muscle paralysis and saving the patient's life.
- Antitoxic — Neutralizing, blocking, or combating the harmful action of toxins, poisons, or noxious chemical substances that have entered the body. It typically applies to biological immunoglobulin sera (antitoxins), hepatic detoxification treatments, or protective equipment specially designed to nullify the lethal effect of complex chemical compounds.
- Antitoxin — A specific antibody formed in the body of a human or animal as an immune response to the introduction of a bacterial, plant, or animal toxin, having the capacity to selectively neutralize its toxic effect. In medical practice, the term also designates the injectable pharmaceutical preparation obtained from the serum of immunized animals, used as an emergency treatment in serious infectious diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus, or botulism.
