#antithrombin
- Antithrombin — A plasma glycoprotein synthesized by the liver, playing the major physiological role of inhibiting coagulation enzymes, specifically thrombin and factor Xa, thereby preventing the formation of parasitic blood clots. Clinically designated as antithrombin III, this macromolecule represents the most important natural anticoagulant in the human body, its efficiency being exponentially amplified by heparin, which is why its hereditary deficiency dramatically increases the risk of venous thromboembolism.
