• Anethole — An aromatic organic compound, an unsaturated ether of the phenylpropene class, constituting the primary component of the essential oil extracted from anise, fennel, or star anise. In a technical and structural sense, it presents as an oily liquid or white crystals with a characteristic sweet odor and strong aromatic taste, widely used in the perfume industry, alcoholic beverages, and in medicine as an expectorant.
• Anise — An annual herbaceous plant of the Umbelliferae family, cultivated for its small, aromatic fruits rich in essential oils (especially anethole); a neologistic, regional, or literary term for anise (Pimpinella anisum). Broadly, the term also refers to the specific sweet, licorice-like flavor extracted from this plant or star anise, heavily utilized in the spirits industry, confectionery, and carminative remedies.
