#anesthesia
- Algostasis — The arrest, blockade, or temporary or permanent suspension of pain sensations; the achievement of analgesia through therapeutic or pharmacological methods. In algology and anesthesia, it describes the clinical stage where nociceptive impulses are interrupted at the synaptic or peripheral level.
- Anaphia — Total loss or pathological absence, either congenital or acquired, of the sense of touch (tactile sensitivity), structurally caused by damage to peripheral receptors, ascending nerve pathways, or the somatosensory cortex in the temporal/parietal lobe. This rare clinical phenomenon deprives the patient of the ability to perceive physical touch, pressure, or object textures, differing from hypoesthesia by the absolute absence of sensory response.
- Analgosedation — A controlled medical and anesthetic technique, structurally utilized in intensive care units or during minor endoscopic and surgical procedures, consisting of the simultaneous administration of a potent analgesic (typically an opioid) and a sedative (hypnotic). This process induces a state of deep relaxation, calm, drowsiness, and complete pain insensitivity while maintaining baseline respiratory reflexes and the ability to respond to simple verbal commands.
- Anesthetize — To subject a living organism, a patient, or an anatomical region to the action of an anesthetic agent, with the purpose of temporarily and reversibly suppressing pain sensitivity during a medical procedure. Figuratively, the action expresses the neutralization, numbing, or annihilation of the emotional, moral, or sensory responsiveness of a person or a community toward external stimuli.
- Anesthesia — A medical method or clinical procedure through which the pain sensitivity of the entire body or a delimited area is temporarily and reversibly suppressed, by administering special chemical substances or through other physical means. Figuratively, the state represents a deep apathy, a loss of mental alertness, concentration capacity, or moral sensitivity of an individual or a collective.
- Anesthesio- — A learned combining form that introduces into the lexical structure of derived words the meaning of anesthesia, lack of pain sensitivity, or techniques of pharmaceutical insensibilization. This structural element is exclusively used in modern medical, biological, and chemical terminology to form complex specialized terms by direct union with various suffixes or nominal roots.
- ICU — Widely used medical acronym standing for Anesthesia and Intensive Care, representing the complex medical specialty focused on ensuring necessary surgical conditions, monitoring vital functions, and providing artificial life support for critically ill patients.
