- Ratite — A scientific term designating any flightless running bird of the order of ratites (Struthioniformes), anatomically characterized by severely reduced wings and, specifically, a flat sternum completely lacking a keel (carina), a bony structure essential for anchoring the pectoral muscles required for flight. As an evolutionary consequence, these birds (such as the ostrich, emu, cassowary, or kiwi) permanently lost the capacity for flight, developing powerful legs specialized for high-speed running instead.
- Female runner — 1. A woman who practices running as a sport or physical exercise; a female track or marathon athlete. 2. That which runs, swift-footed, characterized by rapid movement. 3. A bird or animal structurally adapted for rapid terrestrial locomotion (e.g., ratites/running birds like the ostrich). 4. Historically, a popular name given to a fast-flowing river or the upper, mobile stone of a traditional grinding mill.
- Apterygidae — A family of running birds belonging to the order of ratites, of medium size, structurally lacking functional wings and a keeled sternum, possessing plumage similar to a coat of long hairs and a long beak equipped with nostrils at the tip; the order includes the kiwi bird as its representative type.
- Apteryx — The Romanianized name of the scientific genus Apteryx, which includes the medium-sized flightless birds popularly known as kiwis, native to New Zealand; a native bird structurally lacking functional wings, with poor eyesight but an extremely well-developed olfactory sense.
