- Mite — An extremely small, often microscopic invertebrate organism belonging to the order Acari within the class Arachnida. It is characterized by a compact body in which the head, thorax, and abdomen are fused and not clearly differentiated. The taxon encompasses a wide variety of saprophytic species (such as dust mites) or hematophagous parasites (such as ticks and the scabies mite), many of which act as dangerous vectors transmitting severe infectious diseases to humans and animals.
