- Autosome — A scientific term synonymous with autosome; any of the somatic chromosomes of an organism that is identical in structure and number in both sexes, as opposed to heterochromosomes or sex chromosomes (allosomes). Humans possess a structural set of 22 pairs of autochromosomes that store and transmit non-sexual hereditary information.
